Urban Gardens, examples of using cities
appropriately for food production; A project by The African Empowered
Communities-USA, Northern California Chapter
A city Garden and You:
This is a large place where many humans live, located at a given
geographical point. There are specific characteristics that make up life in the
city: planned location, large populations, people have been organized in
different categories and live side by side.
Cities are spaces for people to be able to engage in food
production. How is that? One may ask. Well here is how: African Empowered
Communities USA Northern California Chapter visited the Tenderloin People’s
Garden.
The reason for this visit
was to make: 1. Acquaintances with authorities and key informants as far as urban
gardens are concerned. 2. It possible to continue interactions. 3. It a culture
to share tips on urban gardening.
Gardening done in groups of people who live together in cities
is thrilling. As a group, it is possible to use the social capital to produce
food, store it and use it or sell it to make money. There are other advantages
when people work together:
It is possible to have conversation and dialogue among people:
groups are opportunities to bring people of diverse background together; groups
are platforms for conflict-resolution; they are opportunities to continue with
mechanisms of cross-cultural growth.
In these settings there are those who take on leadership and advisory
roles. Eventually these people are trusted with a lot of issues. They in turn
provide advice and are known to generate thought processes for solutions.
It was possible to use this opportunity to learn about the
variety of foods and vegetables grown in California. It is hoped that this will
be an opportunity for African Empowered Communities –USA Northern California
Chapter to continue engaging in civic activities as an active participant.
Watch this space more interesting news will be on your way.
