Africa Empowerment Communities-Tanzania Model

What works: using existing development networks in Africa; Africa Empowerment Communities-Lessons from Tanzania

Africa Empowerment Communities

We work within established institutions and communities in Africa to enhance indigenous networking interfaced with global trends.
We work within established institutions and communities in Africa to enhance indigenous networking interfaced with global trends.

Africa Empowerment Communities: Our work in Tanzania

In Tanzania we intend to work with communities in the regions of: Tanga, Lindi, Mtwara, Pwani and Dar-es-Salaam.
We specifically intend to integrate: literacy, numeracy, livelihood and formal social organization in our activities.
We shall work specifically with Women (Expectant mothers, new mothers), children and the general population.
This will mean we shall work with existing institutions that have always mobilized communities. Our task will be to share with them our operating manuals, holdmeetings whose outcome will be a written memorandum of association-MOUs.
Our idea is to be able to work within a locus, identify schools, households and engage communities in identifying needs, identify social service points, train community members in relational skills.
At all times we shall emphasize the value-based approaches, uphold transparency, accountability and consistency.

Community Participation is key part of our designs

Re-Inventing The Wheel In Africa

One of the main reason why we emphasize partnerships and networks is the fact that in Africa, there exists people willing to act as force for change. All they need is a boost and push. The boost and push will be in form of: logistical support; text books; school equipment; human resource exchange; establish structures that inspire confidence from say, credit extension facilities and other well wishers.
We are not about to re-invent the wheel. But rather we shall use what is in existence and may be polish it here and there.
There are organizations that are specifically working in a variety of social services; political departments; religious and cultural sectors.
It is our hope that we shall link up with these ones in all their capacities.
We need all the support in Africa if we are to:
1. Cause conversation about poverty.
2. cause conversation about sustainable resource use.
3. Be held accountable for our deeds.
4. Create a spirit of engaging in income generating activities at family/household levels.
5. Create a critical number of people who are motivated to cause development using appropriate means.
6. Documenting our activities
7. Sharing and disseminating best practices.
8. Establish demonstration units
9. Engage in international exhibitions through; Story telling and show casing community activities.
10. Use the social media to cause visibility.

The Interplay of Grass root, top leadership and International Well wishers

The work we intend to do in Tanzania will emphasize the crucial roles of grass root/beneficiary communities, leadership and international well wishers. We want to emphasize:
SCHOOLS:
If for instance, we identify a school library in one of the regions, we shall involve teachers, students, mentors and community leadership committees. It is these we shall first engage in understanding their roles. This way we hope to gain their trust and input. We want communities to run the projects we shall have started. We also want a commitment to addressing poverty, especially literacy/numeracy poverty.
HOSPITALS/HEALTH FACILITIES:
We want to work with families, households, schools, social services facilities in sharing responsibilities for health upkeep and healthy outcomes. This task will mean many more people are brought on board in upholding health of communities.
SOCIAL SERVICES:
These range from; Non Governmental Organizations, Civil Society Organizations, Community Based Organizations, road works, sanitation, education, police, defense, political, religious and cultural. Some of our enduring indicators will be pointing towards how well we engage with these institutions.
SOCIAL MEDIA:
Through established print, radio, visual and performing Arts, we hope to show case our work.
At all times, we shall cause communities, leaders and well wishers to enjoy cordial relations and be able to follow the progress of activities. This we hope will be motivating and provide a guidance continuum.

CONCLUSION

What works is:
1. having a strategic plan
2. working with beneficiary communities
3. empowering beneficiary communities with stewardship roles.
4. networking and partnering with other service providers
5. documenting activities
6. holding regular meetings to share progress.
7. acknowledging the roles of various sectors.
8. having anti-poverty plans
9. having environment sustainability plans
10. having livelihood support plans for income generation in families/households.
We hope this will be the model for all other organizations causing development of grass root communities in Africa.

Books are Paper Gold!

Whereas there is a shift in a paperlessculture, Africa has lagged behind because it also requires electricity to run the equipment on which to access e-books. There are other reasons why it is easier to read paper backs than e-books in Africa.
Help us address and bridge thereading culture divide.

Collecting Books To Send To Africa

There are various educationaldisciplines and different levels of instruction called grades. We have been engaged in collecting bookssince 2010.

We shall send 1,000,000 text-books to Africa by end of 2015

We are known by supplying text books!
We are known by mobilizing friends/volunteers to collect books for us!
We are known by sending text books to those who need them most!
Help us distribute over 1,000,000 test books to Africa.
The books go to: Libraries, schools and homes.
This is where you come in:
1. You may have books, stationery or other things you want to give out. It is helpful to us as long as it helps a benefactor, student or school.

2. We ask you to enable us collect, package and ship the books.
Have a look at our work so far!

A Library

A LIBRARY AND WHAT ITS BENEFITS TO A COMMUNITY ENTAIL

ROLES OF A LIBRARY/EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE CENTER:
-Different people benefit in many ways. The ways include researching and accessing information from books, Internet, magazines, CDs’.
-Students benefit, improve on note-making, reading and listening skills.
-The library will have assistants available to offer after school or holiday remedial assistance.
-In order to enable students improve on their academic performance, there are some criteria to fulfill: preparedness, access to a comfortable reading place stocked with books.
-We hope to open up our libraries and schools to many students. They will receive help in form of remedial and homework programs.
-We shall work with communities under our community attachment Program. In this we shall introduce students to principles of integration in the world of work.
-We shall have a resource center equipped with job placement facilities. We shall help prospective students explore their opportunities while at the same time train them in post graduate qualifications as they prepare for work.
We hope to share a Library/Educational Resource Center that contains all disciplines including: writing, research, theater, cyber programs.
- A Library/Resource Center creates a sense of discovery. It is that opportunity to access knowledge. It is upon the reader to make that information into an intellectual content and wisdom.

Outcomes

Not only will the users find a large collection of books but some of the most sought after text books.
It is our hope that the beneficiaries who visit a Library/Educational Resource Center, will be excited to see the diverse ways people make use of the Library/Educational Resource Center,
it’s about viewing an exhibit, or expressing the culture of a community you might not be familiar with or being a safe place for young people.
It is a place where people will come to be with others.
Through use of the Library/Educational Resource Center, people will have an opportunity to share experiences and fill in each other.
A Library/Educational Resource Center is a transformation institution.
People see the opportunities in how the library/resource center can have an impact on their community’s highest biggest issues.
The Library/Educational Resource Center gives to everyone an opportunity to meet people and participate in a community that may be different from one’s own.
In a library/resource center one is surrounded by books and computers. This is exhilarating and it makes one feel optimistic and have confidence. In this case, it includes having someone in everyone’s life- a librarian- who is there to answer any question one might have, to help one get the information, to suggest to one what one might want read and think about next.
According to John F. Szabo, "we are cultural institution of the world. The challenge is to make sure we are nimble/ resourceful and able to change- from making use of technology to ensuring that the public educational resource center/ library remains that most democratic institution."
Beneficiaries will access well preserved, protected, and organized content. But that will not be all. Users will find opportunities where resource center/ library is a place where people contribute and generate content, where people tell their stories, where the stories will be preserved for time to come.
The fact that the whole world will be at one's fingertips by just walking into it will not only be empowering but also influence the way Africans seek information. This will be a very big shift from the traditional peer to peer, but will involve using concrete references.

Empowering Communities to Read in Africa

Africans living outside Africa are part of the Diasporas. There are many living in different continents all over the world. This message goes out to them: You all have a role to play to make Africa rise up to the levels and standards of living similar to the countries you call a 2nd home. Join hands with those who have decided to change Africa for the better. This is a model you may like to add your support to. This is what we do at Africa Empowerment Communities.
This is possible by:
1. Establishing an organization that collects, ships and has a depository for books in Africa.
2. Linking with educational facilities
3. Establishing innovative means of popularizing book reading
4. Stocking competitive, cutting edge and well written books.
5. Establish an accessible venue in Africa.
